Under Attraction
Recently Google had featured an article entitled How to Maintain Romance and it occurred to me that idea behind a maintenance program (I used to be a Copier Technician and our maintenance contract was to make sure that the customer’s machine would continue to work efficiently) is often viewed as standing still in life. To maintain literally means to protect from harm, loss, decay or destruction. That takes me to the adage if you’re not moving forward you’re standing still. It begs the question, Why would anyone want to maintain a romance?
In football the strategy of prevent defense is an offensive formation to prevent long gains by the offense and usually near the end of the game. It is geared toward stopping the other team’s pass. Any game that I’ve seen where that strategy was employed by a team - you knew that same team was likely to lose. I’ve never seen it work to the defense’s advantage. They wanted to make sure that they didn’t lose their advantage, they had the lead and they didn’t want to loose it.
To keep from losing, no matter what the premise is, is a great way to make sure you do lose. Nothing in nature is static. It’s all energy and it all is either growing or it’s dying - it will never stand still. Even the universe according to Hubble’s Law is constantly expanding. Those galaxies that are furthest away from us (and our gravitational pull) are moving away with space, not through space. There’s a great analogy in baking raisin bread, as the dough rises the raisins move farther apart moving with not through the dough. There is no edge to the universe.
Look at today’s headlines and see what we are thinking about;
- Highway Kidnapping: 40 Iraqui Shiites Snatched
Northe korea ready to talk, no yeild
Heckler Subdued At Virginia Senate Event
US Economy: Consumers, Business Are Less Optimistic
And the list goes on …
Observe the results that those same thoughts - those same focus points - are bringing us. How does it make you feel when you read those statements?
Back in 1983 there was a popular song on both the Pop and Country charts entitled A Little Good News performed by Anne Murray. Part of the Lyrics included the lines, How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair, And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care How would it feel if we focused on the good news, the solutions, instead of the problems?
Consider the choice of always expanding the things that you DO want, an alive, passionate, vibrant romance, a winning gold medal performance, the energy to play with your grandchildren, to feel alive and vibrant, to see clearly the choices in front of you, to have the business that provides quality products and/or services. That’s where you focus.
Two thousand years ago there was an instruction given that, paraphrased, goes like this; Whatever things are true, just, pure, lovely and of good report - if there is any virtue or praise - think on these things.
What we focus on expands and our choices emphasize the Law of Attraction.
Choose the freedom, the passion, the joy, the happiness in every moment. Play the Glad Game as Hayley Mills shared in Pollyanna. I still remember the feeling when she said that she had received a pair of crutches instead of the dolly she asked for and the thing to be glad about was she didn’t need them. How much freedom would there be in this world is we all chose to find a reason to be glad instead of sad?
What’s your choice?

You’ve heard the acronym for fear is False Evidence Appearing Real and I want to tell you that those individuals making that statement are forgetting a very important reality.
Have you ever seen a child when they’re afraid? Maybe they see someone in a costume and they start crying - I remember how my children, when they were in the Terrific Two’s, hated going to Chuck E. Cheese even though prior to that age they loved the noise, music and characters. Now, they were afraid of the characters, Chuck E. was someone unfamiliar in their everyday world.
There are a number of reasons that psychology gives us for childrens’ fears but no matter how we try to explain it to them they are still afraid, right?
How many of you are afraid of something? It might be a phobia of certain small creatures; like bees, spiders, snakes or other small animals like rats and mice. Maybe you’re afraid of crossing bridges, flying in planes, standing, and looking down from high places, like the edge of a cliff.
Maybe your fear manifests itself as anger or depression when someone does something and you feel pain as in the cases of physical or emotional abuse.
For the business owner, fear might be seen as frustration when they receive a rush shipment of product for a key customer and the order is wrong, or when the assistant doesn’t deliver a message on time, or an employee fails to complete a project on time.
Then there is the parent whose kids are getting out of line and they just want their child to behave themselves appropriately. They want the child to get the grades they are capable of, to do the chores when they are asked, to treat others with respect.
Maybe the fear shows up in a relationship where the partner is showing interest in another person and the feeling of fear may surface as jealousy.
That relationship may even end up in divorce. What about the child of the divorced parents who is acting out by being the class bully or failing in school when they had previously been an A/B student?
You may experience fear as anger when you’re driving down the highway and someone cuts you off for no apparent reason-other than the other guy is a jerk.
The faces that fear wears are as varied as there are emotions that are not love.
So now, if I tell you that your fear is just false evidence appearing real how does that make you feel? Doesn’t it feel as if I’ve just told that your feelings are invalid (false) and yet, they’re YOUR feelings!
Try telling someone who’s just been laid off, lost a loved one, been through a divorce, or afraid of spiders or bees, or the child who’s screaming hysterically that it’s not real.
The feeling of fear is VERY real.
For a moment, consider this meaning–Forget Everything And Run. Isn’t there a strong desire when we’re afraid, to remove ourselves from the situation or to have it removed for us? Don’t we find ourselves wishing that it would all be different and OK? If I could just have them back again, if it just had happened this way, if they had just done what I asked, if they had just been paying attention. The list goes on and on.
In our depression we want to sleep, to be away from everything and everyone.
In most other forms of fear we might show them a thing or two by directly striking back either emotionally, mentally or physically or indirectly by removing ourselves from the situation. This can be seen in divorce, abuse, restraining orders…you get the idea.
All of these situations are VERY REAL to the person experiencing them. They are their feelings. Don’t discount them. Don’t use, or even feel, the phrase false evidence appearing real as it doesn’t serve the purpose of removing the fear in the first place. Consider the choice to be present with your feelings as they tell you where you are at any moment in time or to forget everything and run.
Finally, consider the power of the choice.
When we understand that we live in a universe that is governed by a Law of Attraction, and we are creating our world every moment of every day, then we can choose how we feel about something or someone.
We have the freedom to choose Love or to choose Fear. We choose to be free or to be imprisoned. We choose to experience abundance or lack. We choose to be present, to be our true self, or to escape and hide behind a mask.
So what is you’re choice today? Now? Will today be the day that you choose Freedom?

Do you often find yourself worrying about the things you don’t want in your life? Like I don’t want to be alone forever, I don’t want my partner to leave me, I don’t want to get to 60 and wonder what if…, I don’t want to be poor and struggling for money all the time?
Fill in the blank: I don’t want…. We all have them. Too many of them.
The amazing thing is that we spend an awful lot of time focussing on what we DON’T want rather than what we do want. The consequences? We spend a lot more time feeling terrible about where we are and our lot in life and about what the future may NOT bring. What also happens is that we tend to attract more of the things we DON’T want (life’s way of throwing irony in our face). So we’re busy thinking about all the things we DON’T want to happen, feeling pretty miserable, and then all of a sudden we are stuck in traffic jams, bumped into by a cranky shopper in the supermarket with an evil glare, receiving nasty emails from an irate colleague. This leaves us feeling even worse and we may crash the car, a tree branch goes through the roof, and the dog develops a pussy oozing cyst that requires expensive surgery.
Anyone had a week like that?!
Well there is an alternate way of existing. Let’s take the ‘don’t wants’ from the list above and see what it feels like to change them a little…
I want a loving partner who cherishes me and honours me.
I want to experience all of life’s adventures for years to come with my fabulous adoring partner.
I want to get to 60 and feel wow that was fabulous! I love my life! I love my friends! I want more!
Feel good? Want to feel even better? Try it from the present tense:
I have a loving partner who cherishes me and honours me.
I am experiencing all of life’s adventures with my fabulous adoring partner.
I am 60 and I feel wow that was fabulous! I love my life! I love my friends! I want more!
Notice how you feel reading this last set. This is a place of power and positive intentions. Use this strategy for everything you want - from a parking space near the entrance to the shops, to a new job, to the perfect partner.
Want to learn more about this? Read Lynn Grabhorn’s Excuse Me, Your LIFE is Waiting. I mentioned this book in the last edition. A few of you have gone out and are currently devouring it (I told you it was good!) Get it - now! Then tell me what kind of results you are getting with it - I want to hear all the stories!
As for me, I use this technique and I consistently get parking spots with ease, and my contact database doubled my target numbers for the month in one week! Go on - what are you waiting for!

Many goal setting programs and ideas focus on writing down your goals, creating an action plan, and taking action. This is good advice. It also sounds like a lot of hard work. There are some other additional and more creative ways to achieve your goals. It can be fun too!
By focusing on your environments and creating spaces that are inspiring, motivating, nurturing, supportive, you can actually clear the way for the achievement of your goals. It’s like creating a super highway - clean, fast, straight - right to the door of your goal. Environments can act as partners in your success: they can be designed to make things easier for you, to automate processes - whether this is actions, mental processes, or habits.
Almost anything can be an environment: your body, family, friends, colleagues; values, energy, feelings; home, office, possessions; spirit; ideas, concepts, information; web, customers, colleagues, associates; outdoors, wilderness, beach. The important thing is to choose and create environments that inspire you and support you to be your best.
Here are some examples:
De-clutter your house. Feed your body green vegetables every day. Put calming beautiful pictures in your bedroom. Be selective in what you watch on TV (garbage in equals garbage out - so monitor how much and what is going in!). Hang out with friends who are fun, caring, supportive, enthusiastic. Automate everything you can - hire a bookkeeper, cleaner, accountant, shop on line.
What environments do you have in your life that could do with a make-over, or a spruce up? When you focus on environments rather than outcomes, things just get a whole lot easier, and way more fun!

The quality of our lives is often determined by the quality of our relationships. And yet it is so easy to glide through life skimming the surface of relationships, without truly connecting with others. Here are some ideas to help you strengthen your connections with the people you care about.
Friends: when was the last time you asked how they are, how they REALLY are? And then listened. Really listened to what is happening in their lives. Ask them questions about what is going on for them. Be interested. Come from a place of curiosity and find out about their lives, who they are really, and what their dreams are. Thank your friends for being in your life. Tell them why you care for them so much, what they add to your life. Do the little things - call on birthdays, ring them out of the blue to say hello. Do the big things too - host a birthday party, have a special dinner to honour your friends. Enjoy them.
Family: when was the last time you told your family members you loved them? Don’t assume they know. It always feels good to be told someone loves you. You just never know when you might never have that chance again.
Resolve the baggage you have with your family (yes- we all have some!). Do you really want to carry all that stuff around with you forever?? Do what it takes to get over it. Now.
Partner: when was the last time you looked into your partner’s eyes (really looked) and just appreciated them for who they are? A long soft kiss never goes awry either! It’s the little things that make a big difference - the quiet moments just being together, making a cup of tea for the other person, holding hands, all the little kindnesses that you can do for them - just because you can, and you want to. Enjoy the little moments. Be present.
Share your thoughts and feelings and dreams and plans. Drop the barriers and share who YOU really are. Be brave - be honest. When you bare your soul, you reach out and grow stronger because you become more of who you really are. Express yourself. And then listen.

Under Attraction
When I was an angst-ridden teenager I had many soul-searching days of reflection, anger, confusion. I didn’t like much of the world. All I saw was desperation, poverty, and negativity.
I asked my mother, Mum, what is the meaning of life? She sat for a moment and responded, To raise your kids well.
This was not the answer I had anticipated or hoped for. I wanted a huge and resonating insight like, the meaning of life is to end poverty and war in the world. I wanted a thunderclap and lightning bolt for a life purpose. I was also a fledgling feminist and the notion of my own mother suggesting that the meaning of life was to procreate and focus on child rearing ruffled my self-righteous feathers. Surely there is more to life than being a mother.
Being a half world away from my family, and a couple of decades older, I see of course the wisdom and gem my mother was offering me. (It must be incredibly frustrating as a parent to have to wait thirty years or more for your children to ‘get’ what you are telling them. Humans are awfully slow learners).
You see what my mum was telling me that each of us has a calling. This is not about achievements, like climbing a mountain, or making a million dollars, or founding a chain of successful superstores.
The calling each of us has is to be the best we can be. To live in our greatness every day. For my mum, her greatness is about being a great mum. She approached motherhood with the love of an artist, with the passion of a sculptor, with the vision of any great businessperson. She believed wholeheartedly in the potential of her children and she nurtured this relentlessly (regardless of the tantrums, the ungrateful spoilt teenage years, and the arguments). My mum expressed her quality through her mothering. She taught us that it didn’t matter what you did for a living, just be great in doing it.
Mum is a great mum. She is also incredibly talented and creative. She nurtured her own greatness in creating a number of businesses, including an antique store, a visual display contracting service, a bed and breakfast inn (check it out at www.silverfoxinn.net ) a tea room, bed and bath retail supplies, and numerous renovations of houses. All her projects are done with exactitude, care, and passion. Her ‘achievements’ are really expressions of her own inner greatness, her own creative talents.
It is not about achieving the tick in the boxes. It is about being your best, each day, in whatever choices you make.
So if you are struggling with your life’s purpose or mission, give up the struggle. Focus on your strengths, your passions, and allow yourself to be great. Whether you bake bread, dance, empty rubbish bins, lead a company, or raise your children- be great. Live in your greatness - happy at last in your own real skin.
Happy 59th birthday Mum. Thanks for all the life lessons. I love you.

Have you got a list of things you want to accomplish in your life, before you leave this fair planet? Some big things like get married, write a book, or climb Kilimanjaro? How about fun things like SCUBA diving, learn to ballroom dance, or take a cruise to the Antarctic? How about the legacy you want to leave, like donate $10 000 to your favourite charity, act as a Big Brother or Sister, or volunteer in a soup kitchen?
Living a fulfilling life begins with a vision of what you want.
Committing thought to paper increases awareness when these opportunities arise - they act like little blips on the radar screen of your brain. When something you’ve written appears as a possibility, it is dead easy to say a resounding yes to the experience: after all, you have already decided it was something you wanted to do. Hang-gliding in New Zealand? Of course! Skydiving? You bet! Hiking in the Appalachians? Yes please!
There is something magic about writing it down - opportunities are attracted to you like a magnet. The world is an abundant and amazing place full of possibilities to be welcomed and savoured. Live life, to the fullest, NOW.
Remember the most important part of writing the fulfilment list - you must feel the excitement and joy of experiencing or having the things you most desire now - feel what it is like to have that new dress, or how wonderful it will feel when the house renovations are completed, or how cool and fun it will be to drive that brand new red convertible BMW… you must feel the energy buzz through you. Then keep the list somewhere visible so you can refer to it and activate all those feel good sensations. This is the ’secret’ to attracting all you desire.
What are you waiting for? Craft your own Fulfilment List, or mind map if you are more of a creative type. Articulate the possibilities with no holds barred, and then act on those radar blips.

Just read another article on “losing weight” on the Internet. The theme was establishing goals and getting a “weight–loss plan” together. The theory was good, but the article sputtered in content. Let me explain:
The reason most people fail at anything is that they do not know what they want. They do not get the things they desire because they are not clear about what it is they desire. When I have “projects” that hang over my head without completion, it is due to lack of a clear vision of the end result of what I trying to achieve with the project.
The above mentioned article focused on achieving weight loss and how to write a plan for doing such. If you are an individual who has been overweight most of your adult life, how do you know what your outcome will look like? You may have a general idea, based on magazine pictures of movie stars, but you have not seen an “ideal you” in quite some time.
Don’t get me wrong; I think that visualizing what you would like to look like is a great idea. I think that to ultimately get there you have to use other processes. All the “planning” in the world will not get you where you want to go without changing some internal mechanisms first.
Some great success gurus tout changing your inner world before you see results in your outer world. Meaning you must change “you” before you can expect your life around you to change; this consists of the way you view the world, the way you perceive reality, the way you interact with others. Planning to lose weight without having a firm hold on your current beliefs and mindset (or inner “you”) can spell disaster.
If I am not a proactive person that believes in the abundance life can bring or if I don’t feel I am in control of my outcomes or don’t understand how others in my life can help me achieve my goals and desires, then I may be fighting an uphill battle by trying to write down a plan for successful weight loss and possibly wasting my time. I could have all the goal–writing formulas known to mankind, but never be able to apply any of it because of the way my thoughts are structured and carried out.
I believe it was T. Harv Ecker (www.peakpotentialstraining.com) who turned me on to the idea that “how you do anything is how you do everything.” This is mostly true based on our belief systems and how we view the world around us. Bryan Tracey calls it the Law of belief. Simply put, outcomes will happen to you in your life based on what you perceive to be true; i.e. the rich get richer and the poor get poorer or skinny people have high metabolisms and it is easier for them to stay that way.
You see, we all tend to doings similarly based on our beliefs and values. I believe in integrity, so I will be honest no matter what in the situations I am placed. I believe that order is necessary in my life and so I keep my car, house, desk, etc. clean and free of clutter.
A friend of mine will accept a tenant (or not) for his rental properties based on how clean their car is. As he puts it, if their car is spotless, then they will take care of my house as they rent it.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
Do you think that adding fitness to your life may change the outcome of other areas of your life… like your relationships, your finances, or your job status?”
“I know I don’t exercise or eat healthy, but I am a go-getter at work and still have time for the family.” Really? Chances are you are unhappy at work and tend to ignore those close to you at home, just like your fitness.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
High school students that I train for sports try to tell me that they do what they have to do to get by in school, yet look me in the eye and tell me they will give me 100% on the playing field. “I want to play at the next level and am willing to do anything to get there!” Really? I don’t buy it! I will tell them to remember one area of life affects all the others. You can’t “half-ass” one area and expect to excel in others.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
Now back to the above mentioned article on the Internet.
Let’s pretend I am a business executive looking to lose some weight and happen to read the article with the intent on setting goals and developing a step-by-step plan to achieve my results. Great idea. Problem is, I only have time for my job. My family, social life, and everything else come in second; I do just enough of “the other stuff” to keep everyone happy. I mean I go to the birthday parties, take the wife out once a month for a “special dinner,” play with the kids like a good dad should. But, I am in the zone at work… a little too busy, but one day I will make it big. I am so close! I just have to keep my eye on what is important.
How do you think I will do with my weight loss program? Think I may need to change my values, my priorities, and take a good look at what I want out of life?
How I do anything is how I do everything.
Good luck with that… and thanks for playing!

Why are there weeds in my rose Garden?
When I was a child, I helped my mom and dad pull weeds in our garden. I thought weeds were just odd looking plants and I did not understand why we had to pull them. My mom explained to me that if we did not pull the weeds it would continue to grow and take over our beautiful garden. It was also important that we pull the weeds from the root to prevent them from growing back.
I shared that story with you because it relates to how we live our life at times. We have a vision of having our goals and dreams come to life. But when we look around, we see the opposite happen.
James Allen author of As a Man thinketh says,
Mind may be likened to a garden which may be intelligently cultivated or neglected, it will and must bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein and will continue to produce their kind
Are you attracting or distracting your dreams?
I mentioned in the beginning of the article that I had to learn to pull the weed from the root to prevent it from growing back.
In the same way, that is what we have to do with our lives when our dreams are out of focus.
Getting to the root of distraction is difficult and involves really looking at yourself and asking why.
A lot of time fear is at the root of the weed.
When I looked at the root of the weeds in my life I found that fear of rejection ruled my garden.
I would get excited for an hour about my dream and then I would talk myself out of my excitement. I would frustrate myself so much that I would just give up.
Take a moment and see what is causing weeds to grow and smother your beautiful dreams.
What could you do right now to take a step in the right direction? All it takes is one step.
The universe rewards your effort with the next step for you to take.
We have to trust what our hearts tell us and know that what is planted in the heart can be produced in life.
Be Bold to go after your dreams and watch the weeds wither away.
